Sunway-Rapid KL Good Run 2024 raises RM430,000 for charity

THE Sunway-Rapid KL Good Run 2024 saw a turnout of 10,000 runners in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur on July 28.

The event was part of Sunway's year-long 50th anniversary celebration that took place on Southeast Asia's first specially designed elevated Bus Rapid Transit lanes. It successfully raised over RM430,000 for charity.

The Sunway-Rapid KL Good Run was flagged off by Subang Jaya state assembly person Michelle Ng, accompanied by Sunway group chief executive officer of digital and strategic investments Evan Cheah, Sunway Healthcare group president Datuk Lau Beng Long, Prasarana Malaysia president and group chief executive officer Encik Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, and other guests.

Ng highlighted the significance of such CSR initiatives: "Events like the Sunway-Rapid KL Good Run are vital for fostering community spirit and empowering community engagement, contributing to the nation's overall wellbeing and sense of togetherness."

The event featured three race categories a 21.1km half-marathon, 10km run and 5km run. All proceeds from the run will benefit five charitable organisations, including Unicef, Generating Opportunities for the Learning Disabled (GOLD), National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Women of Will (WOW) and Rumah Perlindungan Darul Ukhwah.

Participants and spectators also enjoyed a race village at Sunway Geo Avenue, which hosted various fun and educational booths from Sunway Theme Parks, Sunway Healthcare Group, Sunway Property, UNICEF, Rapid KL and more.

The event ended with a prize-giving ceremony and mock cheque presentations to the five beneficiaries.

Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long emphasised the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

"With the rise of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes, we need to emphasise the importance of a healthy lifestyle more than ever. Hence, we're pleased to support this run which encourages the young and old to be physically active, with the proceeds going to those in need," he said.

Rapid Bus chief executive officer Muhammad Yazurin Sallij expressed pride in partnering with Sunway Group for the run, which coincides with Rapid KL's 20th anniversary.

"This has given us the opportunity to be part of an important cause in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, while strengthening our brand connection with the community," he said.

As Sunway celebrates five decades of excellence, sustainability and innovation, the conglomerate looks forward to a series of corporate responsibility activities under its flagship #SunwayforGood umbrella.

Upcoming initiatives include a Meal Pack-a-thon in September, organised in collaboration with Rise Against Hunger, with the goal of packing two million meals for underprivileged communities in Malaysia and beyond.

Sunway's commitment to sustainable development and social inclusion extends to their partnership with the Malaysian AIDS Foundation and the Health Ministry, working towards ending AIDS by 2030 and ensuring access to antiretroviral treatment and psychosocial support for People Living with HIV (PLHIV) in Sabah and Sarawak.
