KUALA LUMPUR: The National Registration Department (NRD) aims to achieve 90 per cent digital payment by the end of this year — an increase from 60 per cent last year.
Department director-general Badrul Hisham Alias said this effort aligns with the country's digital aspirations.
According to TV3's Buletin Utama, a campaign introducing card-based digital payments at NRD has been launched to meet this target.
All transactions at the department including those for birth, death and adoption documents, as well as identity card registrations, will transition to cashless payment methods.
This is part of the department's involvement in the "Cashless Boleh 4.0" campaign by PayNet, which aims for 85 per cent digital payment adoption across 20 government agencies.
"We welcome the digitalisation era as part of the government's modernisation policy, ensuring that we keep up with the times.
"As I mentioned earlier, NRD is committed to moving forward in digitalisation and by the end of this year, we will fully implement cashless transactions," Badrul told TV3.
The cashless payment initiative at NRD, which includes three phases, is set to be completed by November.
Two phases involving 170 branches have been fully completed, and NRD is now entering the final phase, which involves 48 branches in Sarawak.
NRD also gave its assurance that people who faced constraints getting on board with the initiative, such as the elderly in rural areas, will be given special consideration to ensure that no one is burdened by its implementation.
