KUALA LUMPUR: Customs Department director-general Datuk Anis Rizana Mohd Zainudin has pledged to continue with her spot checks on its offices nationwide.
"I will continue to make surprise visits to Customs Department offices nationwide," she said, adding that the visits would help her gauge the compliance levels of her officers while also determining if any problems needed to be addressed on the ground.
"We want to ensure that the public face no issues when they come over to any of our offices.
"We also want to ensure that our personnel are not encountering any issues when performing their duties," she said when contacted recently.
Anis Rizana said she recently had the opportunity to make surprise visits to two offices within the Central Zone Unit II (Selangor) jurisdiction.
"I visited the West Port Customs building and the North Port Customs Marine Base last month.
"Based on these visits I managed to chat with some of the staff on duty there while also inspecting the offices and assets for any issues that might have cropped up," she said.
She said the building and asset inspection also helped to ensure that appropriate maintenance or disposal action would be taken by those assigned.
"These impromptu visits also help us to determine if there was non-compliance to administrative guidelines or procedures that have been put in place by our department.
"It will help us to curb any negative work practices by our officers such as those on duty wearing plain clothes instead of their uniform," she said adding that the move was also in line with the directive of the Public Services director general via a letter dated Apr 18 regarding the improvement of quality-of-service delivery with integrity.
She said the welfare of her staff could also be looked into based on these spot-checks.
"Any issues found on the operational or welfare side faced by our staff can be identified and immediately rectified," she said.
