Mahkota by-election: Polling set for Sept 28 [WATCH]

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has fixed Sept 28 for the Mahkota by-election.

The by-election would be held following the death of its assemblyman, Umno's Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said nomination day would be held on Sept 14, while early voting is set for Sept 24.

The by-election would see 66,318 voters going to the polls and the EC allocating RM2.4 million for the process.

"The electoral roll for this election contains 66,318 voters, consisting of 61,397 ordinary voters, 4,510 military personnel and their spouses, 401 police officers, and ten absentee overseas voters," he said in a press conference today.

He added that the Mahkota by-election would have 23 polling centers with 120 polling stations.

In the 15th Johor state election in 2022, Sharifah Azizah won Mahkota with a 5,166-vote majority.

She was in a four-cornered fight with Pakatan Harapan's Taqiuddin Cheman, Perikatan Nasional's Mohamad Nor Lingan and Warisan's Mohamed Noor Suleiman.

Sharifah Azizah, who was receiving treatment at Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Kluang, died at the age of 63.
