Penang Vet Dept wraps up probe into alleged cat cruelty, to refer case to DPP

GEORGE TOWN: The investigation into the alleged act of cruelty against a cat, which went viral on social media last week, is in its final stages.

Penang Veterinary Services Department director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab said the case is expected to be referred to the deputy public prosecutor's (DPP) office next week.

Without disclosing details, she said that statements have been recorded from several individuals, including private veterinarians.

"The investigation is still ongoing, and several people, including veterinarians, have been called to provide statements.

We hope to conclude the investigation soon and submit the investigation paper to the DPP's office next week for further action," she told the New Straits Times.

Saira added that the cat is currently healthy and recovering under the care of the state DVS.

A photo showing a cat with a rope tied around its neck, seemingly hanging from the rear of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, went viral last week, sparking outrage among social media users and animal lovers.

The owner of the vehicle and his friend, who was driving during the incident, have been summoned by the department in connection with the case. The friend claimed that he was taking the stray cat to the vet for treatment.

He explained that the cat had been placed under a basket at the back of the vehicle. However, the basket flew off, causing the cat to fall with a rope tied around its neck. Another driver followed the four-wheel-drive to alert him to what had happened.
