14,000 citizenship applications approved since 2013, says home minister

GUA MUSANG: The government has approved about 14,000 citizenship applications of stateless, adopted and abandoned children since 2013, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today.

He said the applications were under Article 15(A) of the Constitution.

The 14,000 applications constituted about 75 per cent of the applications received by the ministry, said Saifuddin.

The rest, he said, were applications under the Article 15(2) of the constitution.

"I received a lot of citizenship applications. I've managed to approve about 14,000, mostly under Article 15 (A).

"There are also applications under Article 15 (2) that I need to approve."

Saifuddin, who is PKR secretary-general, said this after a meet-the-people programme here.

Earlier in his speech, he said applications were approved regardless of the applicants' race.

"The government hopes the approval of the applications can solve their problems, especially those who do not have citizenship documents.

"Before this, there were so many applications, and I needed to approve them every day.

"The Madani government is concerned about the people, so we will do our best to solve their problems."
