No NGOs appointed to collect funds for Palestinians treated in the country: Khaled

KUALA LUMPUR: The Defence Ministry has not appointed any non-governmental organisations to collect contributions for Palestinian civilians who are being treated in the country.

Its minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the ministry and Armed Forces Hospital have opened their own channels for those who would like to contribute.

"As for entities using the name of the Palestinian civilians (being treated here), I believe we do not support any such organisations.

"For now, if parties are claiming to collect funds for the Palestinian civilians undergoing treatment, I urge them to verify this, as we do welcome direct assistance through the channels we've opened," Khaled told reporters after attending the ministry-level National Month celebration, here.

He said any updates will be issued by the ministry through statements.

Khaled said the Palestinian civilians currently receiving treatment here are doing well and in proper care.

"Their condition is currently stable, and I believe we will provide the necessary and proper treatment. However, recovery cannot be achieved in a day, especially for injuries requiring long-term care," he said.

When asked if there were more missions to bring more Palestinian civilians back to the country for treatment, Khaled said it depended on the government's decision.

"It's not easy to do so, so the situation will depend on the government's decision. At the moment it is just this batch," he said.

Last Friday, two Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) aircraft carrying 127 injured Palestinian civilians and their relatives arrived in the country following a flight from Almaza Air Base in Egypt.

The mission was undertaken following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement at the Palestine Solidarity Rally on Aug 4 in Kuala Lumpur where he said that the country will provide medical treatment to injured Palestinian civilians.
