Fried egg believed to be cause of food poisoning that hit 32 Kuala Nerus students last week

KUALA TERENGGANU: Fried egg which was believed to have gone bad is suspected to have been the cause of a food poisoning incident involving 32 students from a boarding school in Kuala Nerus on Thursday.

State Health director Datuk Dr Kasemani Embong said initial investigations revealed that students aged between 13 and 17 experienced symptoms of food poisoning after having dinner in the school's canteen on Wednesday.

She said the main symptoms observed a day after the students consumed the foul-smelling fried egg were nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea and fever.

However, she said the department was still conducting investigations to identify the exact cause of the incident.

"The Kuala Nerus district health office has already taken control and preventive measures to manage the food poisoning incident involving the students at the school.

"We received a report of the food poisoning incident involving the students last Thursday," she said in a statement today.

Yesterday, state Education Department director Jelani Sulong confirmed receiving a report of the food poisoning case involving the students at the school.

Dr Kasemani said the investigation found that 32 out of 629 students, or 5.1 per cent, experienced symptoms of poisoning after dinner in the school canteen.

She said 23 students received outpatient treatment at the hospital and health clinics, while two were admitted to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for further treatment.

"The two students have since been discharged, while the remaining students only experienced mild symptoms," she said.
