UM associate professor Raja Iskandar elected president of Aids council

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Aids Council (MAC) has elected Dr Raja Iskandar Shah Raja Azwa as its new president.

Dr Raja Iskandar, an associate professor of infectious diseases at Universiti Malaya, will spearhead MAC's efforts in addressing the ongoing and evolving challenges of the HIV epidemic.

"I am deeply honoured by the trust the council members have placed in me. My colleagues on the executive committee (exco) and I are committed to maintaining the science and rights-based approach that has long guided our response to the HIV epidemic," he said.

He said it was important to learn from past experiences while preparing for new challenges, such as the rising rates of sexual transmission of HIV.

"Our focus remains on mitigating the spread of HIV and ensuring that those living with the virus receive the care and support they need," he said.

A statement from the council said the newly elected exco signifies MAC's dedication to adapting to the evolving landscape of HIV/Aids, both in Malaysia and globally.

A notable change is the introduction of three independent positions on the exco, now filled by professionals from the private sector and various professional bodies.

Among the new members is Yayasan Sime Darby chief executive officer Dr Hajjah Yatela Zainal Abidin.

"Having worked closely with MAC for over a decade, we have seen the significant impact of its programmes on communities affected by HIV.

"As a strategic partner of MAC, we are committed to the goal of ending Aids, and I am excited to join the exco to help MAC achieve long-term sustainability," she said.

Azizi Meor Ngah, a corporate veteran with over five decades of experience in strategic business operations, agriculture, media, halal industries, and renewable energy, is the second independent exco member.

They are joined by Louis Ting, managing partner of Louis Tai & Partners, a law firm specialising in healthcare and life sciences.

Ting is expected to offer valuable legal insights and contribute strategically to MAC's initiatives.

The statement said the new leadership team is set to guide MAC through a transformative period, ensuring the organisation remains at the forefront of Malaysia's response to HIV/Aids and continues to advocate effectively for those most affected by the epidemic.
