KUALA LUMPUR: Independent pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi pulled off a stunning comeback to upset world No. 10 Lee Jhe Huei-Yang Po Hsuan of Taiwan in the first round of the China Open today.
World No. 23 Yew Sin-Ee Yi recovered from a first-game setback to defeat the Taiwan Open champions 13-21, 21-16, 21-15 in a 44-minute battle, securing their place in the second round of the Super 1000 event at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou.
Ee Yi credited their victory to adapting to the conditions inside the arena.
"We controlled the shuttle well as we knew how to play against the draught," said Ee Yi in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation.
"We focused on our defence as Jhe Huei and Po Hsuan are an attacking pair. We didn't give up even after losing the first game."
Yew Sin noted that the draught inside the venue will still pose a challenge in their next match, stressing the importance of handling small details that could affect their performance.
Yew Sin-Ee Yi will face Taiwan's Lee Fang Chih-Lee Fang Jen in the next round.
Earlier, Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri were eliminated by reigning world champions Kang Min Hyuk-Seo Seung Jae of South Korea, losing 21-10, 21-18 in just 34 minutes.
