Heavy downpour causes road collapse, dozen stranded due to water column in Slim River

IPOH: A heavy downpour since this evening has caused the Section 10.1 of Jalan Slim River to Behrang Ulu to collapse.

State Infrastructure, Energy, Water, and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said that the authorities were alerted to the incident at 8pm today.

Mohammad Nizar said that the collapse occurred after the heavy rainfall led to flooding in the area.

"This caused the stretch of the main road to collapse. We also believe that during the incident, a water column from Sungai Slim overflowed onto the road.

"The stretch has also been closed to road users until further notice," he said, adding that no injuries have been reported so far.

Meanwhile, the heavy downpour has also caused more than 10 people to be trapped at Risda Eco Park, Ulu Slim River.

It is believed they could not escape the area due to a flash flood and fallen trees in the 6pm incident.

A Perak Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said they were alerted to the incident at 6.50pm.

"All the victims were camping in the area, and a team of firemen was rushed to the scene," he said, adding that the rescue mission is ongoing.
