Some Jalan Masjid India traders close shops after sinkhole incident [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Some traders near the Jalan Masjid India sinkhole that swallowed an Indian tourist yesterday are closing their businesses for safety reasons.

'BuletinTV3' reported that most businesses, which open at 10am, remained shut today.

Trader Mahathir Mohamad, 45, said he closed his business for several days for safety reasons despite not receiving directives to halt operations.

"We hope City Hall will increase monitoring to ensure people's safety, given the high number of tourists and business activities here."

Trader Al Amin Abdul Kasim, 49, said while many had closed their shops, he decided to stay open as he needed to pay the rent.

"Yesterday was Friday. Many people came to the area. We were worried (about their presence), but we pray for the best."

Yesterday, Vijayaletchumy, 48, was walking with her family in front of Malayan Mansion when she fell into a sinkhole that had opened up under her at 8.20am.

The search-and-rescue operation found a pair of slippers belonging to her after almost 17 hours of searching.

The operation is ongoing today.
