KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno General Assembly ended with a poem, in tribute to incarcerated former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The poem entitled 'Buat Seorang Sahabat' (For A Friend) was recited by party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid.
In the hall was Najib's daughter Nooryana Najwa.
"Yana just returned from visiting her father in Kajang prison. Bossku (Najib) sends his regards to all Umno delegates.
"Gina (as Nooryana is also known), uncle has a poem," he said.
The poem was accompanied by a video montage containing photos of Zahid and Najib together.
Delegates were seen wiping tears off their faces, including Yana, as well as Zahid's daughter, Datuk Nurulhidayah.
"Friend, there is nothing more heart-wrenching than to think of you behind steel bars, accompanied by the cold and lonely walls, causing unease," he read as his voice cracked.
In his poem, Zahid also pledged that he would strategies to ensure Najib's return.
Throughout the four-day assembly, delegates in their debates had asked for the former Umno president to be freed from prison.
Party secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Umno would continue to demand justice and a full pardon for Najib.
He said 72 of the 171 Umno divisions submitted motions related to a pardon for Najib.
