Sinkhole-prone areas in Ipoh identified

IPOH: The Ipoh City Council (MBI) has identified sinkhole-prone areas throughout the city and is monitoring these areas, says Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin.

He said MBI will refer to the Mineral and Geoscience Department for corrective measures.

Presently, the MBI is working with state-owned company, Darul Ridzuan Utility Corridor (KUDR) to map underground utilities.

"There are (sinkhole-prone) areas we have identified with KUDR's help," he told reporters on the sidelines of the Ipoh Low-Carbon Day here.

"More monitoring is needed to avoid a repeat of the incident in Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur."

Rumaizi said MBI has signed an MoU with KUDR for the company to carry out utility-related works from July 1 until the end of the year.

So far he said the roads in Ipoh were safe but this would also depend on weather conditions.

On Friday, a 48-year-old woman from India fell into a sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India while walking in the area.

The authorities are still searching for her.
