49 bikers ignite Merdeka spirit in Keda convoy

PENDANG: Forty-nine motorcycle riders from the Kedah Regional Development Authority (Keda) and external invitees from various agencies took part today in the Semarak Kasih Merdeka Keda 2024 convoy, ahead of the 67th National Day celebrations.

Launched at Keda Headquarters in Alor Setar and culminating at Desa Keda Sungai Kecil Ilir in Bandar Baharu, the convoy serves as a part of Keda's Semarak Kasih Merdeka Programme.

Spanning two days and one night, the route winds through four Kedah settlements: Tanjung Setol in Pendang, Taman Sejahtera Rakyat Sungai Toh Pawang in Kuala Muda, Nagalilit in Kulim, and the final stop, Sungai Kecil Ilir in Bandar Baharu.

Keda general manager Ismasuhaimi Sharif said the convoy aims to promote the spirit of Merdeka among Keda settlers.

"We aim to strengthen ties between Keda staff and foster closer relationships with residents through this motorcycle convoy," he told a press conference at the convoy's checkpoint in Desa Keda Tanjung Setol.

"This initiative also brings wider public awareness to Kedah settlements by directly involving them in social activities.

"The programme kickstarted with an official launch by Kedah Road Transport Department (RTD) director Stien Van Lutam at Keda Headquarters in Alor Star. Keda deputy general managers, Kairul Azmeer Abu Bakar (Operations) and Afifah Omar (Management), were also present.

Ismasuhaimi said the programme also aims to instill a sense of appreciation for independence among the younger generation in Keda settlements.

"Through this convoy, I had the opportunity to meet and get to know the residents of Keda settlements," he said.

"When we go to the ground, we can generate new ideas about development planning and discuss how to advance these settlements."

He also urged residents to embrace independence in their thoughts, approaches, and actions as they celebrate Merdeka.

"With the support of various agencies, we can create new economic opportunities that benefit the entire Keda settlement community. By embracing the true meaning of independence, we can free ourselves from the shackles of poverty."

"I also hope that the residents of Keda settlements will not solely rely on government assistance. I want them to actively seek ways to improve their own wellbeing and that of their communities," he added.

Meanwhile, Ismasuhaimi said all the Keda settlements visited in the convoy are potential contenders for the Desa Keda Madani Award 2024.

"Keda zone officers have planned various activities for convoy participants to engage with residents," he said.

"These include 'gotong-royong' (community service), raising of Jalur Gemilang flags, family and religious courses, charity visits, distribution of food baskets, and a public talk centred on the theme of Independence Day."
