Sinkhole incident: SAR continues until victim's found, say police

KUALA LUMPUR:The search and rescue operation for the woman who fell into a sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India will continue until the victim is found.

Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman however said the authorities had yet to determine the extent of the search.

"We had a meeting earlier chaired by the Mayor herself (Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif).

"We will continue the search and rescue operation until the victim is found. For now, I can confirm this," he said in a press conference here today.

Meanwhile, he confirmed that he had spoken with the victim's family members, who are key witnesses to the incident.

"Yes, the family members are key witnesses, especially those who were with the victim (during the incident).

"According to the information I have, during the incident, the victim's sibling was walking ahead, and when the victim fell, the sibling went to check (the sinkhole) but didn't see her at all," he said.

Last night, the authorities finished inspecting all six manholes from Jalan Masjid India to the sewerage pond in Pantai Dalam.

However, there are still no signs of the 48-year-old Indian national who fell into a sinkhole on Friday.

The authorities were searching along a 7km sewage line, which can be assessed from six manholes and one rescue personnel only in full protective equipment was sent in to avoid the danger posed by toxic gases from the sewer.

The six manholes were located in front of Wisma Yakin, in Jalan Melayu, at the Jalan Melayu intersection, in Dataran Merdeka, near Bank Pertanian Lebuh Pasar and in Bulatan Kinabalu.

The sinkhole, which appeared on Friday, caused the woman to fall into the pit.

To date, rescuers here could only find a pair of slippers belonging to her near the location.
