IGP: All cops on field assignments to be equipped with bodycams by year-end

KOTA BARU: The use of body worn cameras (BWC) for police on field assignments will be fully enforced nationwide by end of the year, said Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

The inspector-general of police said a pilot project for the device had been carried out in June and July by Selangor and Kuala Lumpur police.

During the pilot project, he said, several requirements including standard operating procedures (SOPs), were reviewed to ensure the effective implementation of the BWC.

"We have conducted a pilot project using this equipment and reviewed the SOPs to ensure a smooth deployment of the body cameras.

"InsyaAllah, we will start using them nationwide by the end of this year," he told reporters after witnessing the handing over of duties for the state police chief.

It was previously reported that police were expected to receive 7,648 BWCs in phases starting from September this year until February 2025.

The BWC will be mainly used by patrolmen and those from the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department.
