JOHOR BARU: As Malaysians celebrate the country's 67th Independence Day tomorrow, two of the nation's pioneering female leaders share their personal reflections on what 'Merdeka' means to them and their agencies.
This year's theme, 'Malaysia Madani, Jiwa Merdeka', represents the foundation of the country's prosperity and progress, supported by six core values. Madani is an acronym encompassing sustainability, prosperity, innovation, respect, trust, and compassion.
'Jiwa Merdeka' (Spirit of Independence) symbolises the freedom of Malaysians from negative influences in interpreting patriotism and love for the country.
Customs Department director-general Datuk Anis Rizana Mohd Zainudin expressed profound appreciation for the independence that has shaped the nation.
"As a proud Malaysian, I am deeply grateful for the freedom that invigorates our nation.
"It grants us the liberty to express our thoughts openly, pursue our ambitions without fear, and enjoy the rights enshrined in our laws and the Rukun Negara," she told the New Straits Times.
She said Merdeka was not merely about celebrating the 67th anniversary of Malaysia's independence from British rule in 1957, but also about celebrating the limitless possibilities the country offers.
"Customs plays a vital role in the country's prosperity and security, with a steadfast commitment to revenue collection, trade facilitation, and border security.
"In the spirit of our nation's independence, we reaffirm our commitment to uphold the law and regulations with the highest degree of integrity.
"Our principle of 'Cekap, Tangkas & Integriti' (efficient, alert & integrity) is fundamental to our work culture, ensuring that we meet our goals and uphold the trust placed in us by the government and Malaysians," she said.
Meanwhile, Johor's first female Fire and Rescue Department director, Siti Rohani Nadir, said that as a leader in an agency typically led by men, Merdeka represents the freedom to act without violating norms and rules, while providing the best service to the community.
She said this freedom means the right to voice ideas, opinions, and aspirations.
"I am able to exercise these rights, all while bearing the responsibility of protecting lives and property for the well-being of the people," she said.
She added that transparency and accountability are essential to ensure that every citizen, regardless of race, religion, or background, receives equal rights and justice, especially in fire safety and protection.
