KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities have deployed three high-capacity water pumps to draw water from the sewer main under the sinkhole in Masjid India to facilitate the search for Indian national G. Vijaya Lakshmi.
The 48-year-old has been missing since last Friday when the sinkhole opened under her as she was walking in the area. She is believed to have fallen into the sewer main.
Yesterday it was reported that the sewer main is obstructed by rubbish including bottles, tyres, hair and solidified fat.
This obstruction hampered search teams that entered the sewers to look for Vijiya.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) today said they hoped to reduce the water in the sewer main which is 0.75 metres deep to have a clearer picture of what is in the sewer between two manholes in the area.
"Heavy machinery was also used to drill through the pipes so that Indah Water Konsortium pump trucks can help draw water from the sewer," DBKL said in a statement.
On Wednesday, a second sinkhole opened up some 50 metres from where the first sinkhole occurred.
Authorities have cordoned off Jalan Masjid India from Semua House complex to the site of the first sinkhole.
