[Updated] KL still safe, says PM on sinkholes

PERMATANG PAUH: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured tourists that Kuala Lumpur is still a safe place to visit following the recent sinkhole tragedy at Jalan Masjid India.

He was asked if tourists had expressed worry to visit the country's capital following the appearance of sinkholes recently.

"No no.

"For now, there is no such thing," he told newsmen here after performing Friday prayers at Masjid Kubang Semang here.

Anwar said technical studies were being done following the sinkhole incident. He said there was no problem when he passed by the area.

"Just that the areas which needed to be strengthened, we will do so immediately.

"The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa are carefully monitoring the situation daily," he added.

Earlier, he joined the local community for a get together before prayers. He was served with nasi kandar.

Today marks the eighth day since a woman was swallowed by the sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India here on Aug 23.

A search for her is still underway. It was reported that the Fire and Rescue Department's attempt to locate the missing Indian national by exploring a nearby sewer channel has once again ended in failure.
