Siamese community in Tumpat celebrates National Day

TUMPAT: The traditional dance of the Siamese community, performed to the tune of "Sau Lhea Barn Naa," also known as the

"Village Maiden Dance," was one of the unique attractions at the 67th National Day celebration held at Wat Philtulkong today (Aug 31).

Sirik Sukkaseam Sa Kon, the traditional dance instructor at the Siamese Language School of Wat Philtulkong, said that the song conveys the happiness and joy of people living in a peaceful and prosperous country like Malaysia.

According to him, the song is a heritage of the Siamese community and is performed during festivals.

"The song was performed by three groups of dancers as a special performance for this year's National Day celebration.

"As a dance instructor, I also want to play a role in educating students to appreciate the meaning of independence through performing arts," he told reporters after the celebration.

The celebration was also highlighted by a performance featuring traditional Siamese musical instruments known as gedombak, played by the students.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Siamese Association president Sam Maark Suvanphet said another attraction was the high-powered motorcycle parade, which included participants from the Siamese, Malay, Indian, and Chinese communities, symbolising unity among the multi-ethnic population.

"Yesterday, 300 Siamese Language students, along with a group of motorcycles and classic cars, visited several villages in the Tumpat district to distribute the Jalur Gemilang, aiming to fuel the spirit of patriotism among the community," he said. – BERNAMA
