'Anak Merdeka' remind Malaysians meaning of independence as they celebrate birthday with nation

KUALA LUMPUR: A deep sense of appreciation for the country should come naturally as one upholds the spirit of independence, said 'Anak Merdeka' Lieutenant General (Rtd) Datuk Seri Sabri Adam.

Born on Aug 31, 1957, the retired Royal Malaysian Air Force officer, said the current generation must appreciate the true meaning of independence amidst the flood of information in the digital age.

"When we discuss about Independence Day, we talk about the patriotic spirit in those born after independence.

"I believe what we need to instil in the hearts of Malaysian children now is the love for the country," he said.

Business development and corporate finance director Muhammad Nazim Zayeduddin, 51, highlighted the importance of valuing independence.

"We need to instil the spirit of independence to the next generation, ensuring they know who the fighters of independence were and why we value freedom," he said.

Nora Syiqin Lajis, a retired clerk born on Aug 31, 1963, and is actively working with various non-governmental organisations, said it was important for Malaysians to enhance their knowledge about the country's history and the contributions of its leaders.

"In this diverse society, mutual respect and affection among people have a significant impact. This brings blessings and guidance to our independent nation," she said.

The Anak Merdeka 2024 Celebration, held in conjunction with the National Day, brought together 30 Malaysians born on Aug 31 to celebrate their birthday.
