Joint effort on Masjid India sinkhole repair work

KUALA LUMPUR: The Masjid India Business Association (MIBA) will collaborate with City Hall, the Federal Territories Ministry and geotechnical experts to ensure that the repair and reconstruction work on the sinkhole is done thoroughly and safely.

Its president Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said this is vital to rebuild public confidence as businesses in the area resume operations.

"We call for improved stakeholder meetings and greater participation from the Masjid India's shop and business owners to foster collective safety measures.

"Mapping analyses must be shared with MIBA members to ensure potential risks are identified and addressed," he said when contacted today.

Ameer Ali said the sinkhole incident signals the need for stricter safety regulations, transparent public communication and a robust action plan to prevent future tragedies.

On Aug 23, G. Vijaya Lakshmi, 48, a tourist from India, went missing after falling into an 8m-deep sinkhole that opened up underneath her on Jalan Masjid India while she was en route to a nearby temple.

Efforts to locate the victim at the site of the sinkhole yielded no results, despite the detection of an anomalous object a metre underground using ground penetrating radar.

Over 115 personnel from various agencies were involved in the operation.

However, the authorities yesterday called off the search and rescue operation to locate the victim.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the decision was made following a report to the Cabinet regarding the incident.
