[UPDATED] PN stumped by 7 obligations in MP allocation MoU

BANGI: Perikatan Nasional finds it "odd" to see seven obligations in the draft memorandum of understanding they received from the government regarding allocations to opposition members of parliament.

PN chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan today said the obligations included the coalition's MPs supporting the government until the end of the 15th parliamentary term and declaring their assets.

The obligations also required the MPs to comply with 3R (race, religion, royalty) requirements.

Takiyuddin did not disclose all seven terms, but said they would decide whether to accept them before the next parliamentary session.

"It is a bit odd because the MoU for compulsory allocation is for opposition MPs to carry out their work. During our time (in government), we have given (allocation) to all MPs, but here, there are seven obligations.

"The MoU contains obligations for both the government and opposition MPs, but the amount given to the opposition is not mentioned.

"This MoU is set to be effective until the end of the 15th term, so we have yet to decide whether we can accept it or not.

"What does the allocation have to do with the end of parliament's term and support for the government?" he said at the conference of PN-led state governments (SG4) here.

In attendance was SG4 chief panel advisers Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Takiyuddin said he didn't understand why opposition MPs needed to declare their assets because in the previous government, asset declarations were only required for members of the administration, ministers and deputy ministers.

On Aug 26, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the government had yet to receive any feedback on the MoU from PN on allocations for opposition MPs.

This followed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's call for a prompt resolution to the issue.

Takiyuddin said he received the draft MoU on Aug 6 and had asked for some time to discuss the obligations as the opposition was busy with the recent Nenggiri by-election.
