Wanita Umno submits 3 names for Mahkota by-election [WATCH]

IPOH: Wanita Umno has submitted three potential candidates to the central leadership for consideration to represent Barisan Nasional (BN) in the upcoming by-election for the Mahkota state by-election.

Its chief, Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said although they have submitted these names, the decision would be made by the top leadership.

"We hope for the best, and we expect that whoever the leadership names as the candidate, we will support and assist as best as possible to win.

"If the candidate is from Wanita Umno, that would be highly welcomed. We have proposed three candidates, but the final decision rests with the top leadership, taking into account various factors.

"We hope for the best outcome. The important thing is for BN to win the seat," said Noraini who is also Women, Family, and Community Development deputy minister.

She said this in a press conference after launching the Child Protection Advocacy Programme: KASIH Kanak-Kanak at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Kelebang, Chemor here, today.

During her closing speech at the Umno General Assembly on Aug 22, Noraini was reported to have insisted that the BN candidate for the Mahkota by-election should come from her wing.

Noraini had emphasised that it was important for a woman to continue the legacy of the late Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, a former exco member for Wanita Umno, who won with a majority of over 5,000 votes in the Johor State Election in 2022.

However, it was also reported that Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh had proposed Syed Hussein Syed Abdullah from Kluang as a candidate for the Mahkota by-election scheduled for Sept 28.

The Mahkota by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent, Sharifah Azizah on Aug 2, while receiving treatment at Hospital Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom, Kluang.
