PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he will continue to support Manchester United, even though his grandchildren always tease him every time the Red Devils lose a match.
"I have always been a Manchester United fan," he said in his speech at the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly.
"My grandchildren will tell me, 'Papa Tok, you are ancient, the history is gone'," he said.
"But I refuse to change (my team)," he said, adding his grandchildren supported Arsenal and Liverpool."
Anwar said his grandchildren's jokes showed that interest in sports, particularly football, cuts across generations.
"Every time my grandchildren come over, they would say Manchester United lost again Papa Tok, I can't stand hearing it," he said, to the amusement of the civil servants at the assembly.
Most recently Manchester United were beaten 3-0 by fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Earlier, Anwar announced a RM15 million allocation for the national football team, Harimau Malaya.
