Cattle seized near Malaysia-Thailand border

TANAH MERAH: The army seized 10 head of cattle worth more than RM70,000 near the Malaysia-Thailand border here yesterday.

The Second Infantry Division, in a statement today, said no arrests were made in the 6.15pm operation.

"The army team, responding to reports of smuggling activity, discovered two men attempting to smuggle cattle into the country along the Sungai Golok riverbank.

"However, upon noticing the approaching officers, the two suspected smugglers fled into the neighbouring country.

"Upon further inspection of the area, the officers discovered the 10 cattle, which were suspected to have been smuggled in from Thailand."

It said a motorcycle and several personal items were seized.

The case has been referred to the state Customs Department in Bukit Bunga for further action and the cattle have been handed to the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department.

Three incidents of cattle smuggling have been recorded with 96 head of cattle seized this year.

"All seizures were made near the Sungai Golok riverbank," the division said.
