Gua Musang sun bear victim undergoes 3 surgeries

KOTA BARU: The man injured in a sun bear attack in Gua Musang yesterday is now warded at Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital's intensive care unit after undergoing three major operations today.

A hospital spokesman said the neurosurgery, orthopaedics and plastic surgery procedures on Muhammad Zaki Che Mohamed, 33, lasted more than five hours.

"The victim suffered severe injuries, mostly to his body and head," the spokesman said.

"The hospital has provided its best treatment to the victim and he is expected to be in the ICU until his condition stabilises."

It was reported that the victim was setting bird traps in the forest of Kampung Dalam Senduk near Jerek, Gua Musang, when the attack occurred yesterday.

Zaki sustained injuries to his head, eyes and legs.

He was rushed to Jerek Health Clinic before being transferred to Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian at 3am this morning.

It is learnt that the victim had entered the forest alone.

Gua Musang police chief Superintendent Sik Choon Foo confirmed receiving a report on the incident and said an investigation was being conducted.
