Sun bear sent to rescue centre after fatal Gua Musang attack

GUA MUSANG: The sun bear which was captured in Kampung Dalam Senduk near Jerek here, has been sent to the National Wildlife Rescue Centre (NWRC) in Sungkai, Perak.

Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks director

Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the male sun bear was sent to the centre on the same day it was captured four days ago.

"Several rangers have been sent to the village after we received information on the sun bear that entered the trap set up in the vicinity.

"The animal suffered injuries on its face, mouth and hands. The rangers then treated the sun bear before sending it to NWRC," he said.

He believed it was the one that attacked a local man in Kampung Dalam Senduk on Sept 8.

"This was based on the location where the sun bear was captured which about 900m from the place where the man was attacked," he added.

Villagers were relieved when the sun bear was captured.

Village Development and Security Committee (JPKKP) chairman Abd Razak Ramli said on Monday that many villagers had been avoiding their farms due to safety concerns.

He had said the deadly attack had instilled fear in the community and disrupted their livelihoods.

On Sept 8, Muhamad Zaki Che Mohamed, 33, suffered severe injuries from a bear attack while trapping birds in the area.

He sustained deep wounds to his head, legs, and eyes from the bear's claws.

After nearly a week in the intensive care unit at Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM) in Kubang Kerian, he succumbed to his injuries.
