Man injured after attack by sun bear in Gua Musang

GUA MUSANG: A man who went to set up traps for birds in the forest in Kampung Dalam Senduk near Jerek, here, was injured after he was attacked by a sun bear yesterday (Sept 8).

Muhamad Zaki Che Mohamed suffered injuries on his head, eyes and legs, in the incident.

The 33-year-old was rushed to Jerek health clinic before being transferred to Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian at 3am this morning.

It is learnt that the victim had entered the forest alone when he was attacked.

Gua Musang police chief Superintendent Sik Choon Foo confirmed receiving a report on the incident, and said an investigation is being carried out.

Meanwhile, Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said a ranger team was deployed to the scene after receiving a report.

"We received a report about 10pm last night and immediately sent a ranger team this morning," he added.

He said the last time the department received a report on sun bear roaming in Kampung Jerek was on Sept 3.

"We set up a trap on Sept 4 in Kampung Jerek Kaling, about two km from the place where the man was attacked yesterday.

"So far, we have yet to capture any sun bear," he added.
