SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) has confirmed that the pollution in Sungai Chandong, Pulau Indah, Klang last Saturday, which resulted in the deaths of numerous fish, was caused by the release of industrial waste.
According to Buletin Utama, Luas, in a statement, said an investigation into the incident was conducted on Sept 8, together with a representative of the complainant who had spotted the dead fish at 5pm on Sept 7.
"Following Luas' on-site investigation, in-situ sampling revealed that the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) level was 1.25mg/l, while the Ammonia Nitrogen (AN) content was 0.84mg/l."
The investigation concluded that the pollution likely occurred one or two days before the discovery of the fish carcasses.
Further checks revealed that the incident was caused by the discharge or disposal of industrial waste.
However, Luas has yet to determine whether the waste was discharged from the Telok Gong Industrial Area, Pulau Indah, or from other irresponsible parties.
"Follow-up monitoring will be carried out by Luas, in collaboration with the Department of Environment (DOE) and the Royal Klang Municipal Council (MBDK), based on these findings."
"Luas will also conduct close monitoring at the affected area and will take further action in line with the Luas Enactment 1999," the statement concluded.
