Elderly driver's car plunges into drain after taxi makes sudden turn

JOHOR BARU: An elderly man's attempt to avoid a taxi resulted in his Toyota Vios crashing into a drain at the traffic light junction of Jalan Persisiran Perling 1 and Jalan Simbang in Taman Perling earlier this afternoon.

Johor Bahru Selatan District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh, said the 68-year-old driver was unharmed in the incident.

He said police received a report at 2.53 pm regarding an accident involving three vehicles: a Toyota Vios, a taxi, and a Perodua Myvi.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that the taxi, driven by a local man in the middle lane, suddenly made a right turn."

"This caused the elderly driver in the right lane to swerve to avoid the taxi, hitting a Myvi before plunging into the drain."

"The case is being investigated under Rule 8 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 for failing to stay in the correct lane at an intersection," he added.

Earlier, images of the blue Vios in the large drain went viral, with members of the public seen assisting the driver out of the vehicle.
