Chemical stench shuts JB schools; classes for 3,000 disrupted

JOHOR BARU: Three schools with over 3,000 students near Sungai Tebrau and Sungai Skudai have been closed due to odour pollution.

Johor Education and Information committee chairman, Aznan Tamin said SK Maju Jaya and the Islam Hidayah primary and secondary schools, have switched to online, home-based Learning and Teaching for the day.

The closure affected 974 students and 64 teachers from SK Maju Jaya, and 2,039 students and 167 from the Islam Hidayah private schools.

Yesterday, students and staff from SK Maju Jaya were sent home after a strong chemical stench left 21 students sick.

Aznan said physical classes will only resume once the air quality improves, and it is safe for students and teachers.

Over the past week, several areas in Johor Baru experienced chemical contamination.

Yesterday, Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi called for action against those responsible for the pollution.
