PADANG TERAP: The body of a 46-year-old woman, feared drowned alongside her son while crossing floodwaters, was found today in Kampung Tanjung Kiri.
Salmah Mohd Zain's remains were recovered at 7.45am in a palm oil plantation, nearly 24 hours after she and her son, Muhammad Rosman Rohaidi, 19, were last seen.
The two were swept away by strong currents as they attempted to cross floodwaters at 8.15am yesterday near their home.
Padang Terap district police chief Deputy Superintendent Mulkiaman Manzar said Salmah's body was found trapped under palm fronds and logs, about 200m from where the pair were swept away.
"The body has been sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Star for further action.
"Today marks the second day of search and rescue (SAR) operations, which resumed at 7.30am after being suspended last night. Alhamdulillah, Salmah's body was found within 15 minutes of the search restarting.
"Although the operation was called off at 7pm yesterday, rescue teams and police continued to monitor the area overnight," he told reporters at the scene today.
Mulkiaman also urged residents to avoid crossing floodwaters in affected areas.
"We can't know what lies beneath, and we don't want a tragedy like this to happen again," he added.
Yesterday, Rosman's body was found at 5.25pm, also in the oil palm plantation, about 150m from where he and his mother were last seen.
His remains were recovered following a 10-hour search involving firemen, police, and Civil Defence Force personnel.
