Seven temporary flood relief centres open on mainland Penang

GEORGE TOWN: A total of seven temporary flood relief centres have been opened in three districts in the state to house some 220 victims.

A spokesman for the Civil Defence Force said the victims from 52 families are from the Seberang Prai Utara (SPU), Seberang Prai Tengah (SPT) and Seberang Prai Selatan (SPS) districts.

The spokesman said in SPU, there were 150 people from 25 families housed in three centres namely Dewan Banjir Lebuh Banting, SK Lahar Yooi and Sekolah Agama Rakyat Nyior Sebatang.

"There are two centres in SPT namely SK Penanti and Dewan Bukit Teh involving 44 people from nine families, while SPS has two centres namely Dewan Sungai Bakap and Dewan MPKK Sanglang housing 42 people from 18 families," the spokesman said.

As of 7pm, several places still experienced heavy rain and strong winds.

Meanwhile, state Local Government Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye said heavy rain since Sunday, strong winds and heavy rain resulted in trees to be uprooted in 150 locations on the island and 65 locations on the mainland.

"To ensure the people's safety, both the Penang Island and Seberang Prai City Councils have set up special units operating round the clock to take immediate actions upon receiving complaints.

"At the same time, the disaster operation rooms have also been activated in all districts to provide necessary assistance to the people.

"We urge the people to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety at all times," he added.
