ALOR STAR: The number of flood victims in the state continues to rise, with 2,194 victims from 388 families currently sheltered at 11 temporary flood relief centres (PPS) across the state.
Kedah Welfare Department director Datuk Zulkhairi Zainol Abidin reported that these figures were accurate as of 8am today.
"The number of victims has increased compared to the 2,039 people from 341 families reported at 11pm last night," he said when contacted today.
Zulkhairi said new relief centres might be opened in Sik, Yan, and Baling if the rain continues as water levels in several rivers across the state are showing an upward trend.
Meanwhile, according to the Public Infobanjir website, water levels in eight rivers across the state remain above the danger level and continue to rise as of 9am today.
Three rivers in Kubang Pasu, two in Kota Setar, and one each in Yan, Padang Terap, and Pendang have breached the danger threshold.
In Kubang Pasu, Sungai Terap in Kepala Batas recorded a water level of 4.26 metres (m), surpassing the danger level of 3.8m, while Sungai Bata in Kampung Bata registered 9.42 m, exceeding 9.14m, and Sungai Laka in Kampung Padang Pasir measured 22.97m, surpassing 21.6m.
In Kota Setar, Sungai Anak Bukit in Taman Aman recorded a level of 3.19m, exceeding 2.6m, while at Jambatan TAR, Sungai Anak Bukit recorded 1.87m, above the danger level of 1.7m.
In Pendang, Sungai Titi Kerbau in Kubur Panjang recorded 6.38m, surpassing 6.3m, while Sungai Perik in Kampung Perik, Padang Terap, recorded 14.79m, exceeding 14.2m.
In Yan, Sungai Gurun in Kampung Perupok measured 3.66m, surpassing 3.5m.
Additionally, four other rivers in the state, Sungai Ketil and Sungai Sedim in Baling, Sungai Sari in Padang Terap, and Sungai Kedah at Jambatan Lebuhraya Kota Setar, have exceeded the warning level.
Sungai Janing in Kampung Labi, Padang Terap, is now at the alert level.
All 12 rivers in the state are showing an upward trend in water levels.
