KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) is set to develop a 100 megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) in Lahad Datu, with a storage capacity of 400 MWh, making it the largest BESS in Southeast Asia.
SESB chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar announced that the project will begin this month and is expected to be completed by June 30, 2025. The BESS will enhance the Sabah Grid's reserve margin during peak periods and support large-scale solar energy expansion.
"This project will improve grid stability, contribute to environmental sustainability, and boost renewable energy potential," Yaakob said in a statement.
Yaakob recently inspected the upgrade of the Dam Road Main Entry Substation in Lahad Datu, which will serve as the injection point for the BESS. He said that SESB is committed to completing the project on schedule with the trust of ECoS and the Sabah government.
