Six more relief centres open as Kedah floods worsen

ALOR STAR: Six more temporary relief centres have been activated as flooding worsens in the state.

This brings the total number of operational flood evacuation centres in Kedah to 20, currently housing 2,618 people from 482 families as of 4pm today (Sept 18).

State Welfare Department director Datuk Zulkhairi Zainol Abidin said the number of evacuees may increase, and the department is prepared to open additional centres to accommodate those affected by the floods.

"The number of evacuees has decreased, but additional centres have been opened to prevent overcrowding," he said when contacted.

Meanwhile, evacuation operations in several districts are being carried out by the Fire and Rescue Department and the Civil Defence Force.
