Malaysians freed after 2 years in Bangladesh jail for gold smuggling

KUALA LUMPUR: Two Malaysians were released from prison in Bangladesh today after serving two years for smuggling gold into the country.

The Foreign Ministry in a statement today said both individuals were expected to return to Malaysia soon.

"The Foreign Ministry confirms that two Malaysians were released on Sept 20 following a judgment by the Bangladeshi court after completing their prison sentence for gold smuggling into Bangladesh.

"The ministry, through the High Commission of Malaysia in Dhaka, has provided consular assistance to both individuals throughout their detention."

It said that the Malaysian High Commission would continue to assist Malaysians in need of consular aid.

It added that gold smuggling is a serious crime in Bangladesh, in which offenders could potentially face the death penalty.

The statement said Malaysians must abide by local laws and regulations and avoid engaging in illegal activities when travelling abroad.
