Kuantan bridge crash: Retiree dies in hospital hours after wife's fatality

KUANTAN: A 66-year-old man died while receiving treatment at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) today, several hours after the car he was travelling in with his wife plunged into a river at Seberang Balok.

Abd Aziz Ahmad, a front seat passenger in a Proton Saga, succumbed to his injuries at 2.24pm.

His wife, Paridah Dollah, 67, who was driving the vehicle, tragically died at the scene of the accident, which occurred at 10.30am.

Kuantan police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said that Abd Aziz experienced breathing difficulties after being rescued by bystanders from the Proton Saga, which had landed on its side in the river.

"Paridah was killed on impact, and Abd Aziz was treated in the HTAA emergency unit," he said in a text message.

It was earlier reported that the retired couple from Jerantut was travelling across the Balok Makmur Bridge when Paridah lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash off the single-carriageway bridge and into the river.
