Student dies in 10-motorcycle crash near Gurun

ALOR STAR: A 20-year-old student was killed and nine other youth injured, one critically, in a 10-motorcycle crash at Km79.2 of the North-South Expressway near Gurun early today.

Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said Muhammad Amirul Ahmad, from Kubang Rotan, Alor Star, died at the scene from severe head injuries in the 12.10am incident.

Azharuddin said the crash occurred when the youths, aged between 16 and 20, were riding back to Alor Star from Gurun.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that five motorcyclists were travelling in a group. Amirul, who was riding with another group of five motorcyclists behind them, suddenly veered into the front group and grazed against other motorcycles, causing all of them to crash on the left side of the highway," he said in a statement today.

"The four motorcyclists coming from behind failed to avoid the collision and also crashed on the expressway."

Azharuddin said one of the motorcyclists, identified as Muhammad Haizad Hamid, 20, also from Kubang Rotan, sustained serious head injuries and is receiving treatment at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here.

He added that the other injured motorcyclists are being treated at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Pendang Hospital, and a private hospital.
