GEORGE TOWN: The families of two Chinese nationals who were killed when a tree grown inside a historical building here came crashing down on their vehicle last Wednesday, received RM10,000 from Tanjung member of parliament Lim Hui Ying's service centre.
Lim, who is deputy finance minister, said RM5,000 was given to each of the deceased's next-of-kin.
The incident claimed the life of Liu Zhu and his daughter Liu Xinxin.
Liu Zhu's son, Liu Yu Hui, received the contribution to his family's behalf while Xinxin by her husband, Wang Geng Feng.
They received the contribution from Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng as Lim was overseas on official duty.
"I hope this contribution can help to support the families in whatever way possible.
"Soon after the incident, Yu Hui and Wang were in Penang to handle the necessary process," she said in a statement today.
Lim said her service centre would not hesitate to offer other forms of assistance to the families, if needed.
"After the incident, I contacted the Penang Island City Council to urge them to monitor the safety of trees in the Tanjung parliamentary constituency.
"Further preventive measures must be taken to prevent similar incident in future," she added.
It was reported that firefighters took three hours to free the two victims trapped inside their car.
