SEGAMAT: The mystery surrounding the disappearance of a disabled woman for the past five days has been solved after her body was found near a grove of banana trees in Kampung Permatang Panjang, Jementah, here this morning (Aug 11).

Segamat deputy district police chief Deputy Superintendent Ng Swie Chait said police received information regarding the discovery of a body near a grove of banana trees at about 10.15am.

He said the body of Zaiton Hamzah, 60, was found at a distance of about 30 meters from her residence. She was believed to have died several hours before.

"There are no traces of wild animal bites or scratches on the victim's body," he said in a statement today, adding that the body has been taken to the Forensic Department of the Segamat Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Ng said the case has been classified as sudden death.

On Aug 7, Zaiton, the victim, who is mentally disabled, was reported to have left the house at 4.30pm to take a walk before she went missing.

Meanwhile, her brother, Razali, 65, said that although he was saddened by his sister's passing, the family was grateful that she was found.

"We are all relieved that she has been found. It is God's will that she went in such a state," he said when met in Kampung Permatang Panjang.

"Last night, we brothers and sisters and relatives prayed for Zaiton to be found. Less than 24 hours later, we received the news of the discovery of her body facing the Qibla next to a grove of banana trees, about 30 meters from the residence.

He described Zaiton, the fourth child of the seven siblings as very kind and friendly.

Razali said Zaiton will be laid to rest at the Kampung Permatang Panjang Islamic Cemetery.
