KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak's (GPS) Satok state assemblyman, Datuk Ibrahim Baki, has been appointed as the new chairman of the state-owned power provider, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), effective Oct 1.
He succeeds Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi, who has chaired the company since 2005, guiding its transformation into a leading regional player in renewable energy and sustainability.
"Ibrahim brings with him over three decades of experience across industries such as property development, shipping, and media," SEB said in a statement.
It added that, as a legal professional by training, Ibrahim holds an LL.B (Hons) from the United Kingdom and is a Barrister-at-Law from Lincoln's Inn. He began his career as a Legal Officer at Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) in 1984, before co-founding the law firm Messrs Idris Buang, Ibrahim Baki & Co in Sarawak. Ibrahim, who is also the deputy secretary-general of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), serves as a non-independent non-executive director of Petronas.
According to SEB, Abdul Hamed leaves behind an enduring legacy, noting that under his leadership, SEB expanded from a traditional utility with 2,042 employees and a generation capacity of 849MW in 2005 to over 6,000 employees and a capacity of 5,745MW today.
