SUNGAI BULOH: For residents of Saujana Aman here, continuous downpours on Thursday led to waist-deep floods inundating their neighbourhood.
Teacher Mohamad Rizuan Sulaiman said it was around 9pm yesterday when the floodwaters rose to dangerous levels in a matter of minutes.
"The current was strong too. The moment the water began rising, my wife and I started moving all our valuables upstairs.
"I also managed to park our car on higher ground, but by the time I got back to the house, my motorcycles had already been partially submerged," he said when met outside his house on Friday.
The 36-year-old father of three noted that the floodwaters rose to about knee level inside his house.
"Right now, I think our fridge, freezer, and washing machine have been affected by the flood. I help repair motorcycles for my neighbours, and three motorcycles belonging to them were also partially submerged," he said.
Mohamad Rizuan mentioned that when he first purchased the house several years ago, the plans never indicated that the housing area was near a river.
"It was only later when I visited the site that I realised how close we are to the river, but by then it was too late to reverse the decision.
"We moved in sometime in 2018, and since then we have already experienced five floods," he said, adding that he believes this was the second worst incident so far.
He recalled that the worst flood occurred in 2021, when the water rose to the ceiling of the first floor of his house.
"This time around, we are more prepared, but it is still tiring work to clean up all the mud and silt that has accumulated in my house.
"We don't really expect much in the form of financial aid or supplies, but what we truly need is for volunteers to help us clean up in the aftermath," he said.
