Duo nabbed for selling floor mats depicting Kaabah, mosque

GEORGE TOWN: Two men have been arrested for selling floor mats bearing patterns resembling the Kaabah and a mosque.

Deputy state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the men, a 41-year-old stall owner and his 26-year-old worker were arrested after a report was lodged.

The complainant came across the floor mats that were being sold at a bazaar here on Saturday.

The case is being probed under Section 298 of the Penal Code for deliberately wounding religious feelings and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act for insulting behaviour.

"We advise the public against speculating on this case which touches on sensitivities," Alwi said in a statement.

In April, the Johor Islamic Religious Department seized what was thought to be door mats from a hypermarket for bearing the image of the Kaabah.

It was later revealed that the items were mini prayer mats or "sejadah" that had been inaccurately labelled as door mats by the supplier.
