Citizenship: 'We follow feedback in engagement sessions, not sweeping statements'

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry, in drafting the amendments to the Federal Constitution on citizenship, has taken into account feedback by stakeholders in its engagement sessions.

Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry went through the set steps including considering input from non-governmental organisation and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia's (Suhakam) to ensure that every aspect was considered.

"We follow Suhakam's report presented to the Conference of Rulers and everything in the meeting minutes, and not sweeping statements," he said in a media briefing at the ministry today.

He was responding to Suhakam's recent statement calling for the government to reconsider the removal of automatic citizenship for children born to Malaysian permanent residents from the constitution.

Similarly, Sabah Law Society has urged the government to reconsider the proposed amendments to the Constitution on citizenship.

Conference of Rulers has given the green light to the latest citizenship bill presented by the ministry in July.
