Johor police arrest blue Proton Iswara driver for dangerous driving in viral clip

JOHOR BARU: Police have arrested the driver of a blue Proton Iswara who was captured in a clip engaging in reckless and dangerous driving, which went viral on social media.

In the 80-second clip recorded by another motorist's dashcam, the car was seen driving dangerously and recklessly along Jalan Kempas Lama towards Jalan Setia Tropika Utama.

At the beginning of the clip, the driver was also seen pulling out of an intersection without stopping. The video then showed the driver overtaking a car after being honked at.

In a series of dangerous manoeuvres, the Iswara driver was seen overtaking recklessly, repeatedly slamming on the brakes, and eventually stopping in the middle of the road, endangering other motorists.

Johor Baru (North) police chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh, said a police report was filed by a police officer after the video went viral.

"The incident occurred yesterday, but no reports were lodged by those involved," he said in a statement today.

The 34-year-old driver voluntarily came forward at the district police headquarters, where he was arrested.

Initial tests for drugs and alcohol came back negative.

The case is investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, for reckless and dangerous driving.

If convicted, the driver could face up to five years in prison and a fine ranging from RM5,000 to RM15,000 for a first offence.
