KUALA LUMPUR: Two Rottweilers from a foiled smuggling attempt from the Netherlands are healthy.

Selangor Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) director Mohd Sobri Md Hashim said the dogs will be kept at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport's Animal Quarantine Station for the time being.

"Both dogs are healthy and in good condition," he told the New Straits Times.

"Rest assured, they will be well taken care of by experienced officers."

Mohd Sobri said the dogs' owner will have to pay a compound for trying to smuggle the canines in using false permits.

"Once the compound is settled they will have to reapply for permits and approval letters to bring in restricted dog breeds," he said.

Yesterday (Oct 15), it was reported that Maqisfoiled an attempt to smuggle two Rottweilers after inspectors noticed the import permits for the dogs were falsified.

The case is being probed under Section 13 of the Quarantine Act which carries a maximum RM50,000 fine or two years jail or both.

Bringing in restricted dog breeds such as Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Bullmastiffs, Bull Terriers, and Perro de Presa Canarios into the country requires special permits.
