IPOH: The younger generation in agriculture should be trained not only in cultivation techniques but also in technologies like smart agriculture, which uses data and automation to enhance productivity.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said in many countries, technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) were widely used to enhance productivity, manage resources more effectively, and reduce reliance on manual labour.
Saarani said these technologies help make more accurate decisions, increase crop yields, and safeguard environmental sustainability.
"Global challenges, such as the world population increasing to 9.7 billion by 2050 and a 40 per cent decline in water supply by 2030, will undoubtedly put pressure on our agricultural sector.
"To address this, we need to swiftly adapt to modern technologies as preparation for facing various potential challenges.
"I also encourage the younger generation to receive exposure and training in these smart agriculture technologies," he said during his opening speech at the 48th Annual General Meeting of the Perak State Farmers' Organisation at Casuarina Hotel @ Meru today.
Saarani added an eco-friendly, green agriculture approach should be expanded, including the use of organic techniques and renewable energy.
"For example, we can explore the use of solar panels on farms and implement more efficient irrigation systems to reduce water and energy consumption.
"In this way, agriculture can become more appealing and profitable, ensuring the sustainability of this sector for the future," he said.
Saarani added that the state government is committed to supporting the agricultural sector and to strengthening international collaborations.
"The state government is working to attract more foreign investment in the agricultural sector, especially in introducing new technologies that can enhance Perak's agricultural competitiveness on a global scale.
"One example of the initial steps already implemented by the state government is a joint venture agreement between Perak State Agricultural Development Corporation (Perak SADC) and Leiner Gelatine Sdn Bhd, a company from Pakistan, to develop the halal gelatin industry," he said.
This effort aims to establish Perak as a major player in halal product production in Malaysia and worldwide.
"This collaboration will also expand the market for halal gelatin, boosting Perak's competitiveness in the global halal and agricultural industries," he said.
